Oh, she must be PMSing...

“Simmons sits on her cot and cries. In front of everyone.”

“And in front of everyone, they blame her crying on PMS. It encourages men to think what most men think already: that PMS makes girls do incompetent things. Which I prefer to think is not true. Because you still hear lots of stuff like, Women should never be president because they’re too emotional to handle it. What if she got PMS, she’d start a nuclear war!” (268)

In this part of the book, one of the soldiers is going through a tough time. She is new, and has not adapted to her new life as a soldier. She hears the painful screams of people dying, and sees the poverty that surrounds the city. She breaks down and cries because she is overwhelmed with everything.

Kayla Williams reports the passage about PMS, and how men use that against women, portraying them as weak individuals. Yes, sometimes women get more emotional during that time of the month, but it doesn’t mean that they are helpless and cannot function as mature human beings.

Kala goes on saying in the novel that she wishes that women did not use that as their excuse based off of their actions because, “It encourages men to think what most men think already: that PMS makes girls do incompetent things. ” (268) –And I completely agree with Kayla. These are one of the many things that men use to target women, and degrade them.

It's true sometimes men uses the excuse of a women PMSing as the result to her actions, but its not. Women do get a little emtional and crazy during their period, but a lot of women know how to control their attitude. There are those women who blames their actions and rudeness on PMS, but that shouldn't be a good enough reason to be acting the way they are. Of cousre it does add on to their mood, but they should always watch what they are saying and doing before they hurt someone's feelings. As for the men thinking that when women PSM, we go crazy. That's just stupid. PMS is just PMS, it's not a big deal, and no one should use it as an excuse for anything.
